So that means that when a little gap shows up in traffic one lane over, I can just shoot in instantly and fill it. I didn't actually anticipate liking this feature as much as I do in traffic, but it's actually kind of nice to drive slowly without having to constantly move your foot back and forth from brake to throttle to break the throttle and just be able to leave your foot on the accelerator and have the vehicle sort of handle all that for you.Īnother nice thing about the Lightning's electric powertrain is instant torque. That means you can do all the accelerating and all the braking through one pedal. SPEAKER 1: And like many other electric vehicles, the Lightning also comes with a one-pedal-drive mode. So it's easy to have a conversation in the cabin. And it does a pretty good job of keeping outside noise outside as well. Of the nice things about the Lightning's electric powertrain is that it helps to keep the cabin pretty serene, so you don't get any engine noise. So from here on my perch atop the traffic, I can look out way forward and I can see that I'm not really going to be going anywhere anytime soon at all. One of the other nice things about driving these full-sized trucks around is you get a really commanding seating position. And there's nothing worse than sitting in traffic than being sweaty and sitting in traffic. Seriously, these things are ballistic grade. The F-150 lineup has some of the best seat coolers around. But the real exciting thing is that we have front ventilated seats. Our Lightning has heated seats front and rear, which is nice. It just makes it a little bit easier to use. So this center volume knob here can actually transform and allow you to control things like the fan speed or to change the temperature. The other nice thing is that our F-150 Lightning has the update that our long-term Mach-E is lacking. So it's kind of easy to add or take away as much fan speed as you want. Ford actually gives you three different automatic fan settings. And in the F-150, seats are generally pretty supportive, not quite as nice as the ones that you get in like the Ram 1500, let's say, but I'm pretty comfortable. And as you can see, tons of headroom here for both the front and the back seat. One of the benefits, though, of a full-sized truck is you get a full-sized cabin. They really like feeling like they take up a lot of space in the lane. Although, that's sort of a feature for some people. And even when you're driving here on the road, it feels really big. The Lightning is a full-sized truck, which makes it less than ideal for something like parking. In our stuck-in-traffic test we're going to cover four different categories- comfort, cabin features and technology, driver aids, and my favorite- the wild card. They're family vehicles, they're daily drivers, and that means they need to be as adept at handling Los Angeles traffic as they are at towing or hauling. These days, people use these full-sized trucks for everything. Now, you might think that something like a Honda Civic or another kind of sedan is more of a commuter car, but that's not the case. It's kind of a do-everything truck that we've put through a whole bunch of different stuff from pulling things that are way too heavy to putting up some really impressive numbers on our test track.īut one of the things that we haven't done with this vehicle or haven't done and shown you at least is to see how it handles the daily commute. And this is a member of our long-term fleet, and it's one that we really like. ![]() And ever since I started here at Edmunds, I've sort of had this "say yes" policy that I'm currently very much reconsidering. This required a layered, modern marketing approach. Instead, we had more of an organic opening that let people know we where here and that they could come in.” “There’s no such thing as a grand opening in the middle of a pandemic,” Shpall says. Predicting even the near-term future was practically impossible. Let up on the gas? After all, uncertainty ran high in these early days of the crisis. We actually lowered our margins, because we’re sensitive to what’s going on in our economic community.” “We felt that we had to protect our employees and our community,” Shpall says. When the crisis first hit in March, Applejack management made the decision to close the store for two weeks - despite being deemed essential - and pivot to pickup and delivery only. Gregg estimates that the store has had to change 90% of its procedures due to the pandemic. We went from being a business where people walked in and bought, to one with curbside and delivery and other options where you don’t walk in.” But this is “somewhat of a false narrative,” Shpall says, “because we’re also seen a significant rise in costs. Hay-Buddens are widely known about, they bring 4 figures. were sold to every family farm over the last 200 years.Ĭombine scarcity and made by a real anvil maker, as your list, and price really goes up: only about six ~10 lb. anvil isn't that rare, although more 75 to 150 lb. My observation is that although small anvils appeal to some collectors, how many have turned up, scarcity, is even more important in determining value. There you have it, views vary, each valid. A 300# anvil is not measurably "better" than a 120# anvil that is very solidly mounted, so. They are a bear to move around the shop, and unless I can drive to pick it up, the costs of having it shipped can really drive the price up. This isn't to say that I would walk away from a 300# anvil, but that I would take all the factors into consideration. If it goes north of 150#, the value starts diminishing because they are harder to move and would require serious shipping costs. Why buy a 20# london-pattern anvil when I can buy a 20# sledge hammer that will work perfectly as a post anvil?Īnvils north of the 50# mark are serviceable anvils that can be used for general beginner smithing of all types, and they are, again to me, more valuable. I might buy one if it was as-new or really cheap, but I'm not on the look out for something in that size range because you're getting into the territory of any large chunk of steel that can also be used as an anvil. And larger anvil ratchet loppers for removing dead wood.I'd say that anything under 50# is "small" and really not worth my time. Perhaps have a pair of small bypass snippers for the cut flower garden. ![]() Move up to a larger cutting tool for those bigger branches, such as bypass loppers, a small branch saw (my favorite), a bow saw, or when you finally realize that "Life is too short to put up with a problem plant", a good quality chain saw. If those bypass pruners are advertised as cutting through one-inch branches, don't exceed that limit. Using too much force to work the blade through the wood could damage the entire unit. Every gardener should own a pair of bypass pruners.īut a word of warning: don't force cut a branch with bypass pruners that were not meant to cut a larger branch. Steve Zien, owner of the Citrus Heights-based organic landscape consulting business, Living Resources, leaves no doubt to his preference: "I would never use anvil pruners! Never ever, unless something needed to be pruned right then and there, and it was the only tool I had beside my teeth."īottom line: Bypass pruners are much more versatile than anvil pruners. The bypass type cuts cleaner through the softer material without causing much damage." Loren Oki, Landscape Horticulture Specialist with UC Cooperative Extension in Davis, also has limited use for anvils: "I was taught that bypass pruners were used on live material, whereas the anvil types were better for dead wood. "Anvils are for deadheading annuals, and that's about it." Pete Strasser is a former plant pathologist with a former Sacramento nursery, Capital Nursery. I suggest using bypass pruners for up to three quarters of an inch-thick branches, loppers for up to one inch thickness and a hand saw for anything larger." "I tend to see too many wounded branches, particularly when the bark is soft. "I don't use and usually do not recommend anvil pruners," says Luanne Leineke, formerly the Community Shade Coordinator for the Sacramento Tree Foundation. Also, they crush the bark, which bypass pruners can do also, but you can turn the shears so the blade is closer to the collar and make a clean cut." ![]() "When they begin to wear, they often don't cut all the way through.
